New Mexico Employment Information
According to the New Mexico Department of Labor, in April 2006 the unemployment rate was 4.3 percent in the state. This was .4 percent lower than the national unemployment rate for the same time period. In the last year, New Mexico saw an increase of 18,700 jobs, ranking the 13th highest for employment growth across the United States. The three largest industries which accounted for two thirds of this job increase came from the government, health services and construction company sectors. Low interest rates and a high demand for residential and commercial real estate contributed to this boom in construction employment.
The American City Business Journal ranks New Mexico's largest metro area, Albuquerque,, in the top 10 United States cities housing the the highest "brainpower." This report was based off the percentage of residents who have earned bachelor and graduate degrees. The University of New Mexico, Sandia National Laboratories, and proximity of Los Alamos National Laboratory, contribute to this "brainiest" ranking.
