New Mexico Employment Information
According to the New Mexico Department of Labor, in October 2009 the unemployment rate was 7.9 percent in the state. The national umployment rate for this same period compared at 10.2 percent. The New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions estimates 120,200 new jobs will be created in the state of NM through the year 2018. This represents a 13.5 percent job growth rate, as compared to the projected 10 percent nationwide. The job sectors which are projected to see the most growth in New Mexico through 2018 are educational services, health care and social assistance, accomodation and food services, and construction.
The American City Business Journal ranks New Mexico's largest metro area, Albuquerque, in the top 10 United States cities housing the the highest "brainpower." This report was based off the percentage of residents who have earned bachelor and graduate degrees. The University of New Mexico, Sandia National Laboratories, and proximity of Los Alamos National Laboratory, contribute to this "brainiest" ranking.
